The Loc Guide

Why Choose Synthetic Dreadlocks

A clear guide to temporary loc styles, DE and SE pieces, installation choices and how many dreadlocks you may need.

Want a different look without making a permanent decision? Synthetic dreadlocks give you colour, length and volume while letting you return to your natural hair when the moment feels right.

Why choose synthetic dreadlocks?

A fast transformation

Natural dreadlocks take time to form and mature. A synthetic set can be installed in a few hours, so there is no long in-between stage. Many installation methods can work with natural hair from around 4 cm long, although the right minimum depends on hair texture, density and the method used.

No permanent commitment

Wear them for a season, a festival or simply to discover how the style feels. When you are ready for a change, the set can be removed without cutting your own hair.

Freedom to experiment

Natural shades, bright colour, short sets, long sets, ombré blends or a completely custom combination: the look can change without bleaching or colouring your natural hair.

Less daily styling

A well-installed set can reduce the need for daily heat styling and constant handling. It is still important to respect your scalp, avoid excessive tension and follow a sensible washing and drying routine.

A reusable style

Quality synthetic dreadlocks can be cleaned and worn again. That makes them useful for anyone who likes changing their look without starting from zero every time.

Single-ended or double-ended?

Double-ended dreadlocks, often shortened to DE, have two hanging ends. The piece is folded at its centre and attached to one section of natural hair, creating two visible lengths from one installed piece.

  • More visible volume from fewer installed pieces.
  • A full, dense result.
  • Efficient installation for complete sets and bold partial styles.
  • A secure attachment when braided correctly.

Single-ended dreadlocks, known as SE, have one loop or attachment point and one hanging end. They give the installer precise control over placement and can create a lighter result. Neither type is universally better. The right choice depends on the intended volume, weight, placement and installation method.

How many DE pieces do I need?

The exact number depends on head size, hair density and the desired finish. A common starting point is:

  • 35 to 40 DE pieces for a natural-looking full head or when leaving a fringe loose.
  • 40 to 50 DE pieces for a dense, very full effect.
  • 20 to 30 DE pieces for a mohawk or high partial installation.
  • Around 10 DE pieces for a small accent installation.

These are practical guidelines, not strict rules. Your loctician can adjust the plan to protect comfort and balance the weight across the head.
